Demeter, while overseeing her bountiful crops, left her daughter Persephone to play with her companions. As Persephone played, her attention was drawn to a nearby valley, enchanted by the sight and scent of the yellow narcissus flower. She called for her friends to join her, but they could not leave the water bodies to which they were bound, as doing so would result in their death.
